Papers of Allen Caperton Braxton [manuscript], 1801-1947 (bulk 1883-1911).

Journals of Allen Caperton Braxton's document his extensive law practice in Staunton and Richmond, Va. with partners Carter Braxton, Edward Echols, Richard Ker, Taylor McCoy and Lewis C. Williams. There is considerable correspondence on the unfair practices of Virginia railroads, 1901-1902; the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1902, of which Braxton was a prominent member; and on his vice-presidential candidacy in 1904 on the Democratic ticket. The collection contains some papers of Judge Henry Holt, particularly regarding the administration of Braxton's estate, 1920-1947; and some ledgers of Hugh Braxton. The collection also contains three Bath County, Va., documents, 1801-1842, consisting of a land grant to John Lewis signed by James Monroe, 1801; a land grant to Samuels Lewis signed by John Gregory, 1842; and an indenture between John Brown, Sr., his wife Polly, and John Brown, Jr., 1809. Correspondents include H. D. Flood and William A. Anderson.

Miles Anderson (1795-1896) fought in the War of 1812 and enlisted in the Georgia Militia. He married Nancy Pace in 1821 and they had nine children.
